Who Are We Looking For?
You are an inspirational educator, self-directed with deep knowledge of PYP, MYP and DP , who can coach others to grow professionally. You are responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing all aspects of the literacy programme with a focus on improving student achievement. The Chinese Literacy Coordinator is a member of the Pedagogical Leadership Team. The Literacy Coordinator supports teachers in developing best practices around literacy-based learning strategies. Your jobs include:

● Lead Secondary Chinese Team (Language A and Language B)
● Continue to develop secondary curriculum and assessment
● Chinese Digital Literacy Coordination
● Collect and analyze data (YCT, AAPPL, language profiles, report card, etc.) to assist teachers in differentiating instruction, related to literacy skills
● Support PYPCs in the development of a targeted action plan to develop literacy from PYP to MYP and DP
● Model lessons and engage in active reflection

About Our School
The Canadian International School of Singapore (CIS) was founded in 1989. It is a continuum IB school serving a student population of approximately 3,200 students of over 80 nationalities from Nursery (age 2) to Grade 12 across two campuses.

We are two campuses but very much one school. Our Lakeside campus serves a student population of approximately 2,500 students K-12 and our Tanjong Katong campus serves 730 students K–6.

Qualifications and Experience
o A Master’s degree in linguistics or education, with strong native Chinese and near-native English proficiency and literacy skills
o A minimum of 15 years of outstanding PYP, MYP and DP teaching experience
o A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated school/program leadership experience
o Exceptional program organizational abilities
o Superior conflict resolution strategies and great communication skills in both languages
o Competence in working with culturally diverse staff and communities

Additional Requirements
o An effective communicator with the capacity to listen, empathize and connect, as well as teach, present and motivate
o A self-directed leader with a deep knowledge of best practices as it relates to Chinese Language and bilingual learning
o A facilitator building strong and productive relationships with students, parents, teachers and the community
o A culture builder capable of communicating and modelling a strong and viable vision
o An activator with motivation, energy, and enthusiasm to spare
o A producer who is results-oriented with a strong sense of accountability in building intellectual development and academic achievement

Chinese-English bilingual programme

CIS' pioneering bilingual Chinese-English programme is designed to allow students to be fluent communicators in both languages, providing them with an edge in an extremely competitive and ever-changing world. Available to our Lakeside campus students in pre-kindergarten to grade 6 and to our Tanjong Katong campus students in junior kindergarten through to grade 5*. It is fully aligned with the IB PYP and includes two qualified teachers per class: one native English speaker and one native Chinese speaker.

*Grade 6 bilingual classes will be offered at Lakeside only in 21/22.

CIS’ Chinese-English bilingual programme was one of the first to be offered in Singapore by an international school. Our established track record makes us one of the most experienced and trusted international schools in the region to educate students in becoming fluent communicators in both languages.

In our bilingual programme, students attend classes (with the respective teacher) in English one day, and in Chinese the next, ensuring equal exposure to both languages.

Students’ Chinese literacy development is supported by our 36 level guided reading programme, and a well-established system to connect students learning to all other curriculum areas. Additionally, all students have Chinese language acquisition classes five times each week. These classes are taught by separate native speaking teachers, and students are grouped according to their proficiency levels for these classes. In Chinese language classes, teachers follow the highly respected Big Apple Programme, a collection of more than 130 levelled story books written by our Chinese Language and Bilingual School Principal, Huali Xiong.

We currently have 47 bilingual classes and a specific pathway has been designed for students to maintain their Chinese in Secondary School and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). From Senior Kindergarten onwards, students must meet the specific language requirements to enter the programme.

A key feature of our programme is learning about Chinese culture as research shows speaking a language without understanding its culture, has very little real-world value. We also support students in their learning with a wide range of resources including a collection of over 8,000 Chinese fiction books.

Over the past three years*, our students have outperformed all other students in Singapore in the Youth Chinese Test (YCT). Our year-on-year outstanding results demonstrate the overall high quality of our programme.

*YCT was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID 19.
