Mandarin Language Teacher
Reports to: Senior Director, Programs and Services Campus: Koh Pich
Position Summary
The Mandarin Language Teacher will be highly collaborative and keen to contribute to a fast-developing and supportive Languages Team. The position would be suitable for Mandarin language teachers with an understanding of inquiry-based teaching and learning. They would be ideally suited to those who have a passion for language teaching and who are looking for opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of teaching and learning.
All CIS students, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, study an additional language: Khmer, French or Mandarin. The successful candidates will teach Mandarin language classes to a combination of grades in collaboration with other Mandarin language teachers.
Responsibilities
● Create an inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment
● Communicate high expectations for all students
● Plan and design learning activities that address the learning outcomes outlined in programs of study, ensuring that all students continuously develop Mandarin language skills, and incorporating range of instructional strategies that include the appropriate use(s) of digital technology
● Use instructional strategies to engage students in learning activities, based on specialized knowledge of subject areas, an understanding of students’ backgrounds, prior knowledge and experiences, and a knowledge of how students develop as learners
● Utilize differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners; collaborate with Student Services teams as needed
● Employ classroom management strategies that promote positive, engaging learning environments
● Apply student assessment and evaluation practices that:
○ accurately reflect the learner outcomes within the programs of study
○ generate evidence of student learning to inform teaching practice through a balance of formative and summative assessment experiences
○ provide a variety of methods through which students can demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes
● Communicate with parents via Seesaw and/or Google Classroom and be available for in-person meetings and workshops
● Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Principals or Head of School
Qualifications and Experience
● Bachelor’s degree in education preferred, master’s degree an asset
● Ability to secure Alberta Teacher Certification preferred
● Fluency in Mandarin
● Proficiency in English
● Experience working in an international context or culturally diverse setting an asset

Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in education preferred, master’s degree an asset
- Alberta Permanent Professional Certification (PPC) or Interim Professional Certification (IPC) (https://www.alberta.ca/teacher-certification.aspx) or ability to secure either certification preferred
- Fluency in Mandarin
- Proficiency in English enabling conceptual explanations of language concepts and active participation in discussions with the Bilingual Programs and Languages Team regarding curricula, etc.

There are about 180 total school days in the calendar year. School begins in late August and concludes in mid-June. New teachers start orientation two weeks in advance of school opening.

Salaries for teachers with Alberta Education certification start at $26,444 (net). The maximum entry point for those with 8+ years experience is $40,152 ($42,652 with an MEd or equivalent).

Description
Teachers are provided with clean and comfortable apartments with multiple locations to choose from. After 6 months at CIS, teachers may choose to arrange their own accommodation and to receive an accommodation allowance instead. CIS provides $750/month to individual teachers, $1,000/month to individual teachers with minor dependents, and $1,500/month to teaching partners as an accommodation allowance.
